Kona deep sea fishing in August is for Blue
Marlin, Ahi, Spearfish and Wahoo. July through September
is our prime time for big game fishing in Kona for Blue
Marlin.
It is also our tournament season, so if you are looking
to fish during this time, I recommend reserving
a boat early.
As an owner/operator, I can
customize your Kona fishing charter for the type and
size of fish you would like to catch. My rates are
published on my front page and they are the best rates
for a quality boat in Kona. For some clients,
I begin my day going for Wahoo....and once we catch a
one or so, we can switch over for bigger fish like a
Blue Marlin and Ahi. The wonderful
fishing conditions define Kona fishing. We fish
flat water, close to shore for giant Blue Marlin and Ahi.
Fishing in Kona is family friendly and comfortable.
It is also the Blue Marlin capital of the world during
the summer months.
August was excellent for Blue Marlin fishing in Kona and
we expect the same or even better for September.
On our last charter, Ryan and Megan McQuoid from Washington State
had a nice introduction to the fishing in Kona.
First they landed a great tasting Wahoo...and then
hooked up about a 300 lb. Blue. It came off..but
just a bit later, Ryan landed a very nice 180 Blue.
The day before, Jason and JoAnn Pond (and their three lovely
teenage girls, Alex, Shelby and McKenzie) were on
HighNoon for a second day of fishing. From Lake Oswego,
Oregon, Jason's goal
was a Blue Marlin and for most of today, we didn't get a
bite. Then (while Jason was sitting right at the
long corner rod), it went off. Jason jumped a foot
off the deck as the rod scream out a bit of line....but the fish didn't stick. As I went
back to tease the fish back up, it moved to the short
rigger lure, slammed it down and the fight was on! It took about
400 yards on it's initial run jumping most of the time.
After about 15 minutes, Jason got the fish about 20
yards from the boat, when it again erupted into the air
and charging the boat. I powered away and JoAnn
got some awesome video which she will be sending me.
Great day that ended very well as we released a 250 Blue
Marlin. Two days before, we tagged and released a nice 150 lb. Blue
Marlin for John Knie and his son from Washington State.
On August 18, Will Young and friend, Scott McClintic
chartered HighNoon for a full day. Scott has
fished Kona many times before and wanted his friend,
Will to experience the thrill of a Kona Blue Marlin. However, he wanted to
try live baiting as many of the charter boats he had
been on before did not want to live bait. I took
them along the Keauhou ledge where we caught two nice
skipjack tuna and put them in my tuna tubes. After
we rigged them with circle hooks, I put them back in the
water and slow trolled them to an area where I had been
struck twice yesterday on lures. After about 30
minutes, the rubber band snapped out of the clip and the
fight was on! After 2 1/2 hours, we were finally
able to get the fish to the boat. It was too weak
to survive, so we took the fish. Here is the photo
taken today at the weigh in:

Just a few days ago, Peat and Susan Sutherland from
Walnut Creek, California had an unforgettable day aboard
HighNoon. Peat and Susan (along with their three
daughters) chartered HighNoon for a 3/4 day charter.
Beautiful day, calm water and Peat caught the fish of
his life. About 4 hours into the charter, the
short rigger went off and a 300 lb. Blue Marlin took off
on a 500 yard run jumping every 5 seconds or so.
After a 30 minute fight, Peat got the fish to the boat
where I grabbed the bill and took out the hook.
The fish was released to fight another day. Here
are two photos of the release sequence.

Another interesting photo this month was this shark we
were fighting and planning to release. Mark and
Sharon De Monaco from Sayreville,
New Jersey had the unusual experience of having the
shark there were fighting bitten in half. by a huge
Tiger shark. A huge Tiger Shark estimated at over a 1000
lbs had grabbed the shark we were fighting and with one
incredible bite, cut that shark in half!!! Check

Why choose High Noon as your Kona charter boat?
First, HighNoon is
owner operated! Having fished Kona for 17
years professionally, I enjoy talking with each of my
clients and then customizing their very own Kona fishing
charter just for them. While some just want to go Blue Marlin
fishing, some others are looking for smaller fish to
eat....or a maybe just a bit of both. Some even
want a combo trip including a snorkel stop at Captain
Cooks which might take about 30 minutes out of their
fishing day. One of the
greatest things about Kona deep sea fishing is that
every day of the year, Blue Marlin are found in the
waters off Kona, Hawaii. Also, the calm sea
conditions, great scenery, humpback whales and other
aquatic mammals enhance your Kona fishing experience.
Fishing every day helps me know where "the bite" has
been and the best places to find that once in a lifetime
fish for you. I
also enjoy breaking things up during the day. By
that I mean, I might troll lures for a while, change
over to live bait along a ledge and then do a little bit
more of trolling. Sometimes when the trolling bite
is slower, I enjoy dropping down a live bait for a shark
or two. There is something for every one on a Kona
fishing charter. Plus, Kona
Marlin fishing is not just for the experienced angler.
Many of my clients have never been big game fishing
before and have caught Marlin, tuna and other big game
fish. I enjoy showing first time anglers how to catch
giant Marlin and other big game fish. Because of the
calm waters and magnificent scenery including the dolphins
and whales, the Kona marlin fishing experience can be
enjoyed by everyone. I
enjoy teaching people how to fight and land big fish.
Most of the billfish like Blue Marlin and Spearfish are
released unharmed. I also enjoy having people
catch good eating fish like Mahi and Wahoo which we can
then filet up following the charter for a great fresh
fish dinner in Kona. I have even stopped a few times
lately at Captain Cooks (the best snorkeling in Hawaii)
for a refreshing snorkeling stop.
Note 1: If you are looking for a nice condo to stay
